Pakistan has established diplomatic relations with the Federated States of Micronesia.
Highlighting the significance of the occasion, he said that Pakistan is the 100th country with which Micronesia has established formal diplomatic relations.

Pakistan and the Federated States of Micronesia formally established diplomatic relations during a signing ceremony at Pakistan’s Mission to the United Nations on Thursday.

The joint declaration was signed by Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed and Micronesia’s Permanent Representative Ambassador Jim S. Lippwe. Senior diplomats including Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative Usman Jadoon attended the ceremony.

Ambassador Asim Iftikhar expressed happiness that diplomatic relations are being established on Pakistan’s Independence Day and termed it a milestone that will pave the way for cooperation in climate change, capacity building and human resource development. He noted the commitment of both missions to work together on issues of global peace and security at the United Nations.

Ambassador Lippwe described the agreement as the beginning of a new chapter of friendship and partnership. He thanked Pakistan for Micronesia’s support in opening a UN office in the country and expressed his eagerness to strengthen bilateral ties. He also extended best wishes on Pakistan’s Independence Day.

Before signing, the two ambassadors held a meeting to discuss bilateral cooperation and potential areas of collaboration at the UN.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador Ahmed said: “This relationship will open avenues for cooperation in the area of human resource management, capacity building and climate change.”

The envoy highlighted that the two missions will work together at the UN on “important issues, especially the promotion of international peace and security.”

He appreciated that this development came on the occasion of Pakistan’s Independence Day anniversary and that it is the 100th country to establish relations with Micronesia.

According to a statement from the Pakistani mission, Ambassador Lipway “expressed happiness at the beginning of a new chapter in bilateral relations.”

Thanking Pakistan for his country’s support, the ambassador said he “looks forward to working closely with his Pakistani counterpart to strengthen the bonds of friendship.”

Ambassador Ahmed and Lipway held a brief meeting before the event, where they discussed “matters of mutual interest, including bilateral and potential areas of cooperation at the United Nations,” the mission statement said.

The signing ceremony was attended by diplomats from both countries, including UN Ambassador Usman Jadoon.

In December 2024, Pakistan joined a coalition led by small island Pacific states to push for a new agreement to manage the fossil fuel phase-out and finance a global transition away from the threat of coal, oil and gas production.

Pakistan was the first South Asian state to “consider the format of a proposed Fossil Fuel Treaty with the group, which aims to substantially reduce fossil fuel production.”

The 16-strong group has members across four continents, including Vanuatu, Tuvalu, Tonga, Fiji, Solomon Islands, Niue, Antigua and Barbuda, Timor-Leste, Palau, Colombia, Samoa, Nauru, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Pakistan, and the Bahamas.
