Four overs of chaos - second Test begins with more Ashes drama

The drama of the day and night started at the toss, when Australia confirmed the expulsion of bowler Nathan Lyon. But that was nothing compared to the first 20 minutes, which included two English ducks, a missed catch, and a potential wicket that didn't materialize.

Four overs of chaos - second Test begins with more Ashes drama
This was the 26th time Starc has taken a wicket in the first over of an innings, three of which came in this series.

Another day, another test, another city, another pitch. The same chaotic cricket as the Ashes.

Following England's defeat to Australia in Perth two days prior, the second test began with four chaotic overs in Brisbane.

Australian Mitchell Starc caused further chaos by dismissing Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope. Joe Root was then dismissed by the same bowler, and Zak Crawley could have been thrown out by Michael Neser, but the home side didn't appeal.

England eventually survived Starc's five overs without suffering any further losses.

Before an hour had passed in the second Test, the left-hander had already racked up 12 wickets in the series, equaling the feat of Mitchell Johnson, who demolished England on their 2013-14 Ashes tour.

"Mitchell Starc is one of those bowlers who, especially when we'd meet up in a hotel, while I was having breakfast and feeling a bit nervous, he'd always come down very calmly," former England bowler Phil Tufnell told Test Match Special.

"That's what defines a world-class cricketer. You can tell who a world-class cricketer is by the way they have breakfast. I bet he's calm."

Starc's early innings also produced some extraordinary career numbers.

The 35-year-old joined legendary Pakistani bowler Wasim Akram with 414 wickets, the most ever for a left-handed bowler in Test cricket.

Starc also improved his already excellent record with the pink ball. Before this match, he was comfortably the leader in wicket takes in both day and night Tests, and this new streak brought his tally to 83 wickets in 15 matches, 40 ahead of Cummins, who was in second place.
