Noem’s additions would expand that list to a total of about 30 countries, according to several US officials who spoke to CBS News, the BBC’s American affiliate.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has announced that she is recommending a travel ban on several countries that she believes are flooding the United States with criminal activity. On Monday, Noem said on social media that she had met with President Donald Trump and decided to "propose a comprehensive travel ban on all countries that have flooded our nation with murderers, bloodsuckers, and welfare recipients."

Trump and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shared Noem's post on their respective official social media accounts.

It is still unclear which countries the proposed travel ban would affect or when it might take effect. DHS told the BBC that it would announce the list soon.

On June 4, the White House listed 19 countries, mostly in Africa, the Middle East and the Caribbean, that would face full or partial travel restrictions.

Noem’s comments come days after two National Guard members were shot dead in Washington, D.C., last Wednesday. Before her travel ban remarks, Noem wrote on social media that 100,000 Afghan nationals had arrived in the United States under the Biden-era "Operation Allies Welcome" program, and said the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) would review the vetting process.

Authorities have identified the suspect in the Washington, D.C., shooting as an Afghan national who arrived in the United States in 2021 as part of a program for locals who worked with U.S. troops during the 20-year deployment in Afghanistan.

According to emails from last year obtained by CBS News, the suspect experienced mental health issues after arriving in the United States.
